Board of Managers Retreat

This weekend, the Camp DeWolfe Board of Managers shared time together at Camp DeWolfe for their annual retreat. The weekend was full of fun, laughter, fellowship, food, and essential time together building community and planning for Christ's ministry in areas of Service, Staff Support, Events and Strategic Development. Creating a firm foundation

This week, the old and broken fencing and walls around the Swimming Pool were removed ready for a new masonry wall and new fencing that meets the Health Department's Code. Also, the framework is going up for new bathrooms in the Meeting Hall, St Luke's Chapel and the Canon Davis Dining Hall addition. New heating systems are installed in these three buildings too. We are each reminded of personally having firm foundations in Christ as these essentials of heat, plumbing and electrics are improved.

Heart surgery

This January, lots of renovation work has been completed underground, in order to upgrade plumbing to buildings and electrics to buildings at Camp DeWolfe...

We are reminded how there is always more than meets the eye. Lots of infrastructure under the surface of what can be seen needs upgrading and brought up to code...

Similar like with each of us, because most of the work that Christ does in changing and growing us into loving children of God, happens under the surface, within our hearts and minds. Heart surgery. It hurts, it's painful and it's messy. BUT the result is always to improve the quality of life and conditions following....

We pray that as we see these physical improvements at Camp DeWolfe, we also remember a lot of these improvements are within. This month we thank God for His grace and mercies that are new each morning.

With each of these snapshots, we encourage you to see the mess and dirt and remember that a life with Christ gets messy, as the Holy Spirit always longs to remove what we are not created to carry or be burdened with. Christ longs for us to be free and clean and pure. As it is with this ministry... look at each picture and remember the dirt and mess... but also remember and envision that within the next few weeks, this will improve and will be cleaned and will be a place of peace.

New Food Service Manager

As of March 1st 2012, Camp DeWolfe has a new year-round Food Service Manager!

Tina DeGolyer, of the Wading River/Shoreham area will begin to serve meals for the retreat season and summer camp season in-house. She is currently recruiting a team of kitchen assistants for weekend work and summer camp work. We are thankful for the opportunity for Tina to share her skills and gifts in food service and hospitality management!

I was born and raised in Wading River and upon graduation from our local high school, Iona College, NY accepted me into their Bachelors of Arts, Business Program. After graduating in 1990, I was equipped with my degree and several internships, including in Restaurants and Hospitality, so I then began my post college career. Happily, I met my future husband who was already in Food Service. Fortunately, our vision for life, career and children compliment our passion for food! As my husband and I grew as partners in life, we also grew our business horizons expanding into deli's, college food service and our full service catering organization, that includes parties, events, weddings, showers, holidays, industrial and our local 'Out East Winery's.' Since 2006, I have had the opportunity to cater for Camp DeWolfe. Following the 2011 renovations, I now serve at the Food Service Manager for Camp DeWolfe. Cathedral Youth Group Retreat

On Martin Luther King weekend, a group of youth from the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City had their J2A retreat at Camp DeWolfe!

It was a cold weekend with wind and chills but the group had a wonderful time in community together, and made the most of their weekend together in nature! The group did service projects, played games, studied the Word together, ate together and joined in learning more about what it means to Believe and have faith in Christ.

We are thankful for the opportunity to host such a kind-hearted and genuine group of young people.

Winter projects for winter retreats

John Bennett, Camp DeWolfe's new property manager took the liberty to make the most of the so far mild winter weather and cut, split and stack enough fire wood for several winters at Camp DeWolfe. Luke 2:4-7 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn...

The words of Luke 2 always seem to be the simplest words that are read in the Bible. And it is very fitting thing to hear these words multiple times throughout the Christmas season. And if you are like myself, the response to these words in your head can sometimes be lost to things such as: “Yes, yes I know the story” and “Well that was nice! Now do I have time to get to the mall after church?” or “Christmas. Yes I wonder if I’ll get better gifts than last year?”

It’s a slippery slope in the thoughts of the mind especially around this time of year with so many things to do, friends to meet up with, family gatherings to coordinate, gifts to wrap and the list goes on… Yet, when we pause to carefully digest what actually Luke was writing we find our thoughts may come up short to what the writer might have originally hoped for. In fact, I think the more we dwell on the words above, the more we appreciate how special and how important and how life changing this small paragraph is. “The story of God…becoming flesh… to become the Savior of all of mankind…and there is not even a room for him to be born in!” A much different thought than wondering about which Christmas cookies we prefer!

2011 has been a year for the record books here at Camp DeWolfe! Hundreds of volunteered hours of service, dozens of parishes reinvested in camp ministry, 17 cabins painted, a spring season of retreat nearly completely full and countless efforts by people across the Diocese to help bring to life a plan for the renewal of this great ministry. Words do not express the sincere thanks that must go to those who have donated their time and efforts to Camp DeWolfe this past year. Thank you!

2012 is already set up to be another great one for Camp DeWolfe. And there is a great eagerness and anticipation to see the potential of what has been planned, to actually come to life. If I am at all excited about seeing an “Air Conditioned Meeting Hall” (of which I am!), I have to be one million times more excited to celebrate a new beginning for all of humanity through the birth of Christ Jesus!

It is with this thought that the staff of Camp DeWolfe, wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in 2012!

From Brooklyn to Wading River

One of the Camp DeWolfe Board of Managers, Adam Zaher, gave up part of his Christmas vacation to volunteer at Camp DeWolfe this week! Adam served with a smile and enthusiasm after traveling from Brooklyn to Wading River. He willingly cleared a basement so that contracted work could continue with electrical installations, and made and posted Fire Alarm signs in cabins. Adam also assisted with distributing camp maps and retreat guest information cards to each of the accommodations too. We had time over lunch to listen and hear what God is doing in his life currently. Adam is studying at St Johns University and taking both Bachelors and Masters degree courses with a double major. He is actively involved in ministry on the local level and is discerning the call to ordained ministry in the future. We are thankful for faithful Board members who are following their calling to ministry, both at the camp and in the communities they each serve, live, work and study in. Visiting St Mark's Westhampton Beach

On Sunday 18th December, Camp DeWolfe staff had the privilege of visiting St Mark's Church in Westhampton Beach. The community were welcoming and the youth pad-gent was a joy! The youth at St Mark's Church made and presented a parish banner for the Camp's Dining Hall and also a donation for the operating fund. Camp DeWolfe staff were able to meet with parents and parishioners in the coffee hour and share information and news about camp programs and retreat opportunities. We pray for the parish of St Mark's as they search and discern for a new rector, and also hold in prayer each family, adult, child and parishioner this joyful season.

Partnering with Vaughan Park in New Zealand

Camp DeWolfe has recently connected with Vaughan Park Anglican Retreat Centre, in the Diocese of Auckland, New Zealand. Retreat centers aim to serve the church and build the church worldwide. Camps and retreat centers are para-church ministries that offer a space for renewal, reflection, peace and grace in natural settings. Retreat centers are to offer hospitality to all guests and are often a place where groups or individuals can take time from the busy modern lifestyles, to pause, breath, think and pray. Camp DeWolfe is pleased to share a new partnership across the Pacific and is pleased to share information about some of the programs that Vaughan Park offers to people worldwide.

Boy Scout Troop 300 Service Day

On Saturday 10th December, the Boy Scout Troop 300 from St George's Episcopal Church in Hempstead served at Camp DeWolfe. Steve Lindo and the troop gave their Saturday to do a couple of essential projects in the crisp yet sunny winter weather.

The troop distributed over 50 new tempur-pedic mattresses to all the heated cabins and returned old mattresses to the dining hall for donation. Then the troop did some brush clearing in front of St Luke's Chapel. This work now means the chapel can be seen from view upon entrance.

The eagle scouts led the other scouts and the group served self-sufficiently and with dedication and enthusiasm. This troop is proud to run itself and the other scouts train and lead the younger scouts. What a team of young men of God! It was a gift to be part of this day. Camp DeWolfe looks forward to hosting this troop again in the new year, as they have monthly servicer projects and monthly camping trips as part of their program. We are thankful to now be back on their list of locations/sites for their program as they spend time in community, the outdoors and as they develop as leaders in Christ.

New beds at Camp!

Today, 150 new tempur-pedic mattresses arrived at Camp DeWolfe! $150,000 worth of mattresses from a charitable donation from Tempur-pedic based in Kentucky! Camp DeWolfe only had to cover shipping and admin fees for this offer, through Good360.org - a non-profit organization that connects businesses with charities and non-profits.

A fantastic team from St Mark's Episcopal Church, Islip; St Mark's Episcopal Church, Westhampton Beach; the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, and the Bennett family helped unload them then distribute them in cabins, lodges and houses across the Camp property! What a gift! What a positive and hard-working team from across Long Island too! We thank God for His blessings, which overflow everyday. Book your 2012 retreat today to enjoy new tempur-pedic beds!

Be Encouraged

Camp ministry and youth ministry is all about the youth. Jesus said "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." (Mark 9:37). Young people are a blank slate. Young people are open to forming world views, values and life goals.

Following the 'Be Encouraged' Pastors and Youth Leaders Conference in Brooklyn, we are reminded to keep the main thing the main thing. We are encouraged to teach and live grace. We are reminded to meet young people where they are at, not where we are at.

From Daniel 1, we see from Daniel's example, how we are to train our minds and souls. We are to train our brain for appetites of God, not of this world. Guard our souls, remembering God is greater than the enemy. We are all called to be a changer, not be changed, in Christ's strength. We are called to be present and remember ministry is about people not things.

From 1 Corinthians 2, we see from Paul's example that we don't have to go around with wise or persuasive words, but rather we are to hold up our neighbors in joy and love, with the Holy Spirit as our strength.

From 1 Samuel 13, we see how we can join in ministry and partner as armor-bearers with one another and believe in our leaders, spouses and fellow servants in ministry.

From 1 Samuel 30, we see how David found strength in time alone with God, when his hometown was burned down, his family, wife, and children were captured, and his friends all turned on him. Pray pray pray and pray some more - this isn't just talking... it's listening to God and it's sitting in His presence. Receiving from God in prayer fills our souls and feeds our hearts with endless love and grace. Do we live in a House of Prayer? Are our homes and churches and camps houses of prayer?

From Mark 3:13, we see how Jesus called His disciples, as he calls each of us. Our first call is to BE WITH JESUS. The enemy distracts and discourages us from being with Christ. When we spend time with God, He can examine our hearts and show us grace anew.

Some questions to ponder:

How can we hear God's voice unless we are listening?
How does Jesus look at our ministry's?
Are we seeking the Kingdom of God first?
Do we trust that God will take care of me/feed me/cloth me etc?
Are we in ministry or are we just in meetings?
Are we taking the word of God for granted?
What cuts or wounds do we carry in my soul?
When time is up on Earth, what are the fruits of the ministry? - Money? Stuff? Awards? Books? or People?

We were reminded this week about the gift of God's word in the Bible, the power of prayer, and the focus of ministry on people. People matter. Love wins. Grace abounds. This is mission. To love God and love our neighbors as ourselves.

Youth Leaders' Conference in Brooklyn

Mission Mission Mission

As a ministry of the Episcopal Church, Camp DeWolfe had the honor of attending and participating in the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island on 11th and 12th November at the Marriott in Melville, NY.

Over 600 participants attended the convention that was focused on mission and mission .... and mission... across Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, in addition to global missions in Haiti. Clergy from across all 4 arch-deaconries attended and both lay and youth delegates representing over 140 parishes and ministries across the Diocese met together in council.

The weekend included exhibits, presentations, special orders of ministry, and changing and adapting the church canons through resolutions that were discussed and voted upon. Times of prayer, worship and Bible study centered the weekend on Christ and the gospel. Everyone joined together in Communion, gathered for meals, and built community by connecting across the region with other ministries and parishes. What a time of fellowship and discipleship.

Camp DeWolfe had the opportunity to be a presence in the exhibits with an exciting booth and lots of Board members to support and mingle. Matt Tees presented a Special Order sharing with everyone the vision and purpose of the camp ministry, including updates about the much needed renovation work. 2 new Board of Managers were elected: Canon Domenic Ciannella, and Rev Luke Fodor, who both will serve until 2014.

We thank God for His grace this weekend, as many showed interest in supporting this ministry, through the Adopt a Cabin program, the Friends program, signing up for summer camp, signing up for retreats, offering volunteer service, donating funds, and re-connecting with this ministry at this important time. We thank Christ for His faithfulness in years gone by, and praise Him for His vision for the future.

ECCC Summit on Faith Formation

This week, Camp DeWolfe staff attended the Episcopal Camps and Conference Center's first Summit on Faith Formation "Building the Continuum". Over 80 participants from across the USA and beyond, met at Duncan Center in Delray Beach, Florida, and spent an intensive course together vision casting, formulating and planning around the focusing question:

*How might Christian lifelong faith formation over the next ten years affect the renewal and transformation of the Episcopal Church in the 21st century world?

Participants from Camps, Conference Centers, Retreat Centers, Parishes, Schools, Youth Ministries, Health Care Ministries, Diocesan offices and National offices merged for the following goals:

*To analyze the present realities and future uncertainties in the church and world and envision potential futures for Episcopal Christian Formation in a diversity of settings over the next 5-10 years.
*To develop a shared language and understanding of the future of Christian Formation in the Episcopal Church by creating four scenarios (narratives) of the future.
* To guide the development of more comprehensive strategic planning and action that envisions multiple futures for Christian formation in the Episcopal Church.

Driving forces and uncertainties included economic, cultural, technological, religious, political and social dynamics.

The team created a 2x2 scenario matrix that portrays 4 possible future outcomes.
The 4 future narratives for 4 action plans for ministry opportunities were:

Scenario 1) A Church Engaged in the World; Community and Connection are enhanced by Technology

Scenario 2) A Church Separated from the World; Community and Connection Enhanced by Technology

Scenario 3) A Church Separated from the World; Community and Connection Diminished by Technology

Scenario 4) A Church Engaged in the World; Community and Connection Diminished by Technology

Teams for different ministry settings then developed action strategies for each of these future scenarios, so that ministries can prepare and be proactive no matter how the future pans out! A draft report was created and a final report will be completed by early 2012.

It was a gift to be able to partner and connect with people from across the nation (and further) from different ministry settings and collaboratively work together to build (or rebuild) the church in the 21st century!

John Bennett, of Calverton, will begin his calling and role in January 2012. John's previous experiences at Camp Judson in PA, Brookhaven National Lab in NY, and Joslin Diabetic Camp in MA will provide useful and effective as he manages the 26 acre grounds and facilities at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River.

We thank God for calling His servants to this camp ministry and pray for strength for John as he volunteers this fall removing brush and dead trees and branches, and for dedication to serving Christ at Camp DeWolfe.

New Tempur-Pedic Beds!!

Great news…. Camp DeWolfe is getting brand new Tempur-pedic mattresses!! 140 twin and 8 full mattresses will be delivered to the Camp before the end of the year!

Camp DeWolfe was approved for an application for these mattresses through Good360's offer with Tempur-Pedic for non-profit organizations. This means that Benson House, the Retreat Lodge, all 8 heated cabins and 3 of the smaller cabins will have brand new tempur-pedic mattresses!!

Camp has a total of 164 twin beds and 140 of these will be replaced. Praise God!!!!

Construction update

On Monday 24th October, the floors in the Meeting Hall and St Luke's Chapel will be removed! This is a 4-5 day project!
On Thursday 27th October, the Outdoor Swimming Pool will have work done on filtration, equipment and updates needed for operating in 2012.
Contractors bids were turned in for major work for the Meeting Hall, St Luke's Chapel and the Dining Hall this week!

Pray for God's plans and timing and provisions for this work so that Camp DeWolfe can be a safe and peaceful place for all guests and campers.

Youth Pre-Convention Day

On Saturday 8th October, about 50 youth from across Long Island attended a Pre-Convention Workshop in Garden City. Youth from many different parishes from Brooklyn to Suffolk County were able to meet and mingle, while discussing and sharing issues that are important to them in the 21st century. Workshops included what youth like about their church communities, what social issues matter to them, what they would change about their parishes, and what mission and community service activities are important. Bishop Provenzano shared some encouraging words during the day, including the fact that youth are not the future of the church... they are the church today. Many of the youth will be attending the Episcopal Church's Diocesan Convention in November. So, as delegates, they had time to discuss what they want to share at Convention. They formed some resolutions to be voted on at the council. Of course, the Camp DeWolfe staff joined in for fun and games and served with registration and being a general helping hands for the high-school event.

Seasonal cabins painted

Volunteers from True North Community Church in Bohemia served at Camp DeWolfe this week. They joined us in painting the final 5 cabins with a fresh coat of white paint. This service team serves at a different ministry or organization or location each month and encourages people as they go. We are thankful for their sacrifice of time and energy on a rainy weekday evening. It is wonderful to join with all believers to serve Christ and His kingdom on Long Island. Praise God that all 17 cabins have been painting inside and out over the last 3 months.

This fall, God has blessed Camp DeWolfe with some helpful and devoted volunteers, as the Camp gets cleaned up and cleared out ready for 2012. One of our faithful volunteers deserves particular mention and thanksgiving... John Bennett... this fall John has given more than 25 hours a week for landscaping, brush clearing, tree felling and grounds work! We are thankful for his dedication, energy and willingness to serve God through any task and any challenge.

Today, the Camp was covered in flags! This is not simply for Columbus Day weekend, but it is a utility mark-up for the construction work that is currently being bid on by contractors. Everyone needs to know where water lines, electric lines and sewer lines are, so to avoid them! Similar with life... we all need to be aware of gaps in the road to avoid falling in them! We are thankful for a God who directs our paths and has a plan for His people to never perish. Praise God!

Why Retreat?

Amidst the fall weather, the work at Camp DeWolfe is continually in preparation for the New Year when the Retreat season will be “officially” opened to all once again! We look forward to hosting and serving many guests between the months of January and June. Each group has its own particular purpose and characteristics, but there are some foundational similarities and reminders as to why groups and individuals are encouraged to “Retreat” to Camp DeWolfe.

1. A Place Apart- In today’s world there is a never ending supply of entertainment, events, and to do lists that surround us on an average day. There is continual stimulation exclusively offered now by our phones linking us to everything, everyone and everywhere, EXCEPT that is, to where we currently are and who is currently around us. Many retreat groups at camp simply come to put away (for a weekend or few days) the “things of this world” because they realize the inherent truth that, we as a society are in desperate need to experience silence. There are so many things that compete to fill lives and before long we can easily be consumed by it. A balance is needed to pause and rest our minds and hearts from the “noise” of life that separates us from each other and God. Coming to experience silence at Camp is a vast and profound experience. Jesus modeled solitude for us when he would find a place to be away from others. “At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place” (Luke 4:42). Jesus, God in flesh, “retreated” from his daily life, which encourages us to do the same. But this does ask the question, Why?...

2. God’s love- Is there any bigger reason? Mark 1:35 says, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Now Jesus was not praying that a certain team would win the World Series that year. But it had more to do with the fact that he realized that he must take the time to get up in the morning and be with His heavenly father to receive the love that He needed. Then, he could love everyone else that day who he came across. The same goes for all of us.

3. Nature- It is interesting to note how Jesus frequently retreated to a place in nature, such as a “mountain side”. Not the middle of the city, or synagogue. But a mountain side, outside and in God’s creation. (Luke 6:12). This leads to the fact that God revels himself through nature. Have you ever seen a spectacular beach sunset, or mountains surrounding you as far as you can see, or a quiet walk in the woods? It all shouts the glory of our Lord, right before our eyes! God’s creation is experienced at Camp DeWolfe on morning beach walks, quiet strolls through the bluff, watching the wave’s crash down or star gazing on the grass field at night. It is a holy thing to experience God in nature, as He reminds us all who really is in control.

4. Community- Perhaps the biggest reason that a group comes to Camp DeWolfe is simply that they are a group and would like a place “to be” together. Today we find a striking decline in engagement of the community right around us. How many people do you see sitting in restaurants using their phone while disengaged from the people around them? How many children have you seen playing video games alone all night? The list can go on, but the reality is that God created us to be together for our benefit. Groups go on a “retreat” to support each other by simply being together and “being” the children of God.

5. Service-. Jesus models “service” for us in Luke 12. Jesus prayed on the mountainside (Nature) then called his disciples to himself (Community), and then preached to the surrounding area and healed people of their diseases (Service). Camp DeWolfe offers retreats because what happens during the group’s time goes beyond that weekend alone. It is quite amazing how after a weekend of being together at a camp retreat, people generally are ready to go and do something for others. Whether it be to go back to support the church, share with others what God shared with them that weekend, or specifically help those in need after realizing the great depth at which God’s love is for all of us.

This fall at Camp DeWolfe has been full of change, renewal and adventure! Each day includes a sense of anticipation as Camp DeWolfe prepares for re-opening this January. It is amazing to look around the grounds of the Camp and literally see the work that has already been accomplished in such a short period of time. As the fall progresses, so does the “major” work to the facilities, and I wish to share some of the good news and developments at Camp DeWolfe.

In regards to physical improvements to Camp DeWolfe, eleven of the retreat cabins have received a fresh coat of interior paint to provide a more comfortable experience for all guests, with plans to finish the rest of the cabin painting before the New Year. The pool has recently received a new shed and new plumbing has been installed so that campers can enjoy an outdoor pool to swim in next summer. The main entrance to camp has received a much needed improvement in the form of a brand new sign. Hopefully everyone will now know exactly where Camp DeWolfe is! Entering into October, work is also set to begin on the Dining Hall, as new bathrooms are added; the Meeting Hall, as new floors, windows and doors are installed; and St Luke’s Chapel, as new floors, bathrooms, chairs and new Altar window is installed to provide scenic views of the Long Island Sound. Lastly, Benson house has been newly re-furbished with beds, desks, drawers and everything else a retreat house could need!

Programmatically, Camp DeWolfe has already opened Summer Camp Registration for 2012 and has begun scheduling retreats and events for the year-round retreat season this winter and spring. A great resource in this process is the new use of “Online registration” for Campers and Retreat Groups (Camp Website), which makes the registration process more effective and accessible. It is only October and campers are already signing up for the summer camp sessions, while summer college staff positions are now open for interview and screening, with the hope to be filled by January 2012. We are already excited to have campers here in a little less than 8 months! The youth of our Diocese can expect to experience a totally revamped and exciting week of camp from 2012. Highlights each week will include canoe adventures in the Long Island Sound, sailing, wilderness skills, swimming, archery, camp fires, cross camp games and a great deal of surprises along the way! This fall, Emma and I have also had the opportunity to visit each week with different parishes and Day Schools across the Diocese. We were able to share, in person, what is going on at camp currently, provide information about Summer Camp and Retreat programs, answer questions, meet many of you and play a great deal of games! It has been an amazing time to literally, “Spread” the word about Christ’s vision for using camp for spiritual formation, while experiencing the hospitality of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. A special recognition goes to St. Andrew’s Mastic Beach, St. Mary’s Hampton Bays, St Stephen’s Jamaica, St George’s Astoria and Grace Day School with whom we have had the opportunity to visit with spend some great time with. Thank you!

We are delighted to share with you just a few of the ways that the Lord has been working in this part of the Diocese. Jeremiah 29:11 says: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” We pray that we all truly live into these words as we seek the Lord’s direction in all things and at all times. Run-raising!

A big thanks to those who supported Camp Staff, Matt and Emma Tees, in their participation in the Hampton's Half Marathon! Over $1200 has been raised by friends, family and supporters of the ministry. They both completed the 13.1 mile run on September 24th 2011, with a joint time of 2 hours, 8 minutes! (9.53 minute mile). The event was community building as over 2000 partipants ran the Half-Marathon and 500 more ran the Marathon. This was the 5th annual Hamptons' Event. The rain held off but the humidity was high! Congratulations to Father Patrick Ward from the St Mark's Episcopal Church in Westhampton who ran this event in preparation for the Philadelphia Marathon in November.

Reclaiming God's kingdom

As we begin Fall this week, we look back to summer and have been reminded how God calls each of us to join in reclaiming His kingdom, here on Earth. We are not to live a life here, where salvation as simply a free pass to Heaven. Rather, we are called to live out God's plan and will, as we pray...'Thy will be done, on Earth, as it is in Heaven.' Even in this part of the world, on Long Island, we are striving each day to reclaim sheds, huts, lodges, cabins, grounds, pools, chapels all for God's work to be done here, as it has since 1947, and for the next season of Christ's ministry to be able to be the reason that Camp DeWolfe exists.

Seeing God in community

This Fall, the Camp DeWolfe staff are visiting a number of parishes, schools and communities to meet people and to share the vision that Camp DeWolfe is a ministry that serves, hosts and provides a place and programs available for everyone across Long Island. This month, visits have included St Andrews Church, in Mastic Beach, Suffolk County, the Episcopal Clergy Day in Garden City, and St George's Church in Astoria, Queens. Other visits will include St Mary's Church in Hampton Bays, Suffolk County and St Stephens Youth Group in Jamaica, Queens.

It has been a wonderful opportunity so far to see God's love in action in these diverse communities. Each community has welcomed us differently and it reminds us that we are all called to "Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." (Romans 15:7) In particular, we are thankful and encouraged by the authenticity and hospitality that St George's Church in Astoria shared with us last weekend. What a kind and caring family of God! We joined in celebrating Reverend Kim's anniversary of ministry and were generously provided delicious Korean food for lunch!

Today, we pray for every community across the Diocese of Long Island and beyond, "that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen" (Ephesians 3:17-21).

The Harvest is ready...

On Saturday 17th September, a group of faithful volunteers from the local community and from Christ Church, Oyster Bay, served at Camp DeWolfe! The final heated cabin was painted with a coat of interior white paint! The team were dedicated and servant-hearted, as they each gave of their busy schedules to attend the final Service Saturday of the season.

This fall, we continue to welcome more volunteers during the weekdays to join us in painting Benson Retreat House during the remainder of September and they the interior walls of the 8 summer cabins during October. We are encouraged, honored and thankful for the 150 + volunteers who have given their time to serve at Camp DeWolfe this summer season for Service Saturdays. What a people! We hope and pray that we can all continue to give of our time, talents and resources to serve in Kingdom works, which ever part of Long Island, New York state, country or part of the world we find ourselves.

New Roads

This week, Camp DeWolfe has been blessed with new roads leading to the entrance road, provided by the local authorities. What a gift to and perfect timing to have a newly paved Northside Road! This will make it more accessible and durable during the winter months for guests and visitors to the Camp.

Final Service Saturday for 2011

Join us this Saturday 17th September for the final Service Saturday for the summer! We will be painting the interior of some of the cabins, so that all the Boys cabins are given a coat of white paint ready for January 2012 retreat season. The day runs 10am - 4pm with lunch break. Volunteering on Labor Day Weekend

On Labor Day weekend, a group of 15 volunteers from across the Diocese of Long Island served at Camp DeWolfe! The team painted the inside of two heated cabins with a coat of white paint, ready for re-opening in January. Thank you to those volunteers to gave their time and energy to serve on the holiday weekend!

Board of Managers Service Day

Camp DeWolfe's Board of Managers gave their time and energy to serve at Camp DeWolfe on September 2nd! More than 10 Board members and some of their families got stuck into some of the dirty jobs at Camp and supported the Camp Staff all day long.

The Meeting Hall basement was cleared out, one of the Boy's Cabins was painted with a coat of white interior paint, the Maintenance Sheds were cleared and organized, the first 700 summer camp brochures were labelled, sealed and stamped and caught today's mailing, and lots of files were sorted through. The community shared lunch together and really gave back to Camp DeWolfe. What a joy to serve together and what a great gift to work in community with others, as the Body of Christ.

Clean up after Irene

After two days of raking, leaf blowing and chainsawing branches, Camp DeWolfe is in good shape for renovation time this Fall! We are called to be stewards of the Earth and God is always pleased when we take care of His Earth. If you would like to serve at Camp DeWolfe, the next Service Saturday is 3rd September and will be a day painting the interior of two heated cabins! Hurricane Irene

God answered prayers this weekend at Camp DeWolfe! Despite Hurricane Irene's winds and rains, the Camp has no damage to buildings or structures. The roads remained clear. No windows or doors were broken. No flooding to buildings. No trees down. Only branches and leaves to clear up this week. The beach trail took a weathering from the rains. The beach was even cleaned by the strong winds and all the hay, straw and trash has gone, and more sand has been deposited! Power was out for 48 hours but since Tuesday everything is running smoothly. Praise the Lord!

Long Island Sound Closed due to Hurricane

On Friday 26th August, Suffolk County Ecology Department closed the Long Island Sound and asked all property along the coast to ensure that no one goes onto the beach until Tuesday 30th August due to Hurriance Irene.

Camp DeWolfe has shut and locked windows and doors and closed down as much as possible in preparations for the Hurricane. All movable items have been moved inside. Boats are locked down together. Food and water supplies are in. Maybe the odd bush will be brought down, to save landscaping work this fall!

Please pray for everyone along the East Coast this weekend, for safety and wise choices to be made. Our true homes are in Heaven, so we remember that any 'stuff' or 'items' we might have aren't priceless. We continue to praise God even in the storms, remembering He is faithful. God is good. Camp DeWolfe staff pray for you this weekend, wherever you are, that you look to God for His protection and provisions, even in challenges and trials.

Benson Basement Cleared Out

Last week, the Benson House Basement was cleared out! This isn't a place for guests, but it is still a place on Camp that needs care and stewardship. Old and broken items were removed. Broken dishwashers, broken shelving, broken toilets and sinks, moldy wood, scrap metal, out of date paperwork and much much more was cleared out! Now, the basement can be used to store equipment, linens and files. The filing cabinets were organized by year for ease of access. Some desks and shelves that were not broken or damaged have now been re-painted and placed in some of the cabins to be used! Everything has a purpose and it's important to make use of the items that are on property. We are called to be stewards of the Earth and take care of what God gives us...

Matt Tees, the new Executive Director and his wife, Emma Tees, the new Program Director at Camp DeWolfe are signed up to run the Hamptons Half Marathon on September 24th 2011. They have registered to run 13.1 miles to raise funds for Camp DeWolfe. They have been training several weeks now.

St Anselm's and St James' Serve at Camp

Over 20 volunteers from St Anselm's Church in Shoreham and St James' Church in St James served at Camp DeWolfe on Saturday 20th August. The teams joined together in community to paint the Arts and Crafts Classroom and the Retreat Lodge. What a great day to be in the outdoors and enjoy God's creation, while serving in practical ways. We are thankful for these two parishes and their dedicated parishioners. If you would like to join us at Camp DeWolfe, the next Service Saturday is September 3rd 10am - 4pm. Young and In Love With Christ, and Each Other

We met just over five years ago. SHE was an organized, caring and on time Unit Leader for the staff of elementary youth at a Christian Summer Camp. HE was an organized, caring and perpetually late Unit leader for the staff of the high-school youth at a Christian Summer Camp. God’s matchmaking talents are definitely creative because halfway through the summer, Matt (being a trip leader) ended up with Lyme disease and unable to work, while Emma (being on time) showed up one day with breakfast and a smile to aid in the recovery. Dating did not begin until after the summer was over, but the rest as they say, is history…

There are many love stories and each has its own special tale. However we would like to focus on part of our story that was and is the MOST important part of our relationship: We were “In love with God, FIRST”. During the summer of 2006, both of us spent time individually praying that God would: 1) Do with us whatever HE wanted to. 2) That He would NOT put any distractions to serving Him, in the form of the opposite gender. It’s funny looking back, but we both earnestly meant what we prayed! We desired to serve the Lord, through serving youth and only because we had each freshly experienced the transforming love and forgiveness of Christ in our own lives.

Brennan Manning is quoted as saying, “The deepest desire of our hearts is for union with God. God created us for union with himself: This is the original purpose of our lives.” Christ has to be the center of our own lives, before anything or anyone else. And we would say this for three reasons….

1) Christ is the only lasting foundation for any relationship- We all have desire to be loved. However, if we do not receive love from God first, they are going to try and receive it from another source. The center of a relationship then changes from Christ’s desire FOR the relationship to a person’s needs FROM the relationship. To “make it really work, really depend on God”. Dependence upon the Lord’s strength and love has to be the foundation of our lives.

2) Loving Christ leads to loving others-“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:16-18). We each know the great cost at which we were paid for by Christ. As the Word of God states, this love from God should then lead to loving others through actions. This is God’s command to us, for the good of others and ourselves. It is an amazing thing to serve, but just think of the kingdom impact when two people come together with the goal serving, solely because God has loved them! Then think of what that relationship might look like when both desire to serve and love the other, not wanting anything in return, but because God has called them to do so. That is something we want to be a part of and that is God’s hope for each and every relationship.

3) God Shows up – “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7) If you are ever looking to “see God in action”, make him the center of your life and see what happens. Care for the things He cares about, do the things He says, and follow Jesus’s leading. The Result? Be prepared to have impossible prayers answered, miracles in each day and see others come to know Christ. And if you are in a relationship, you might just see God in the actions and love of another person, who cares for you in a way you never thought possible. Also be prepared to see God move mountains… maybe to move countries, states and change jobs! Going back to personal experience on this last point, we starting dating the fall after we met, and within two years we found ourselves in over 15 countries, four continents and engaged on a volcano! God then continued His adventure with us as newly-weds, where the first three years of marriage have included not yet owning or renting a home, not yet owning a car, living with and raising 10 at-risk youth in the mid-west, and now running a Christian Camp on Long Island, similar to the one we met at over 5 years ago! His Will be Done, not ours!! God is good and loves us just as we are, but he also longs to take us on a journey with Him that will challenge and grow us into who we are each created to be.

Our hope and prayer is that we can each make God the source of all strength and love in every moment every day. This is not just to have a better relationship with another person, or because we are ‘supposed’ to do so. But, because Christ’s love is so all encompassing that there is no better way to live than directly as HIS Beloved. “At once they left their nets and followed him” (Matthew 4:20).

Benson House

Aside from the major renovations to St Luke's Chapel, the Meeting Hall, Canon Davis Dining Hall and Kitchen, and the outdoor Swimming Pool, Benson House will be getting a make over before January 1st 2012!

Neighbors have kindly donated desks, tables and chairs.

Benson House now needs beds, mattresses, dressers, sofas, tables and decorations to make it a Retreat House that is comfortable for guests year-round.

Upgrading the Swimming Pool

The outdoor swimming pool is getting much needed work over the next few weeks... new exterior fencing, new showers, new entrance gate area, new filter system, new sheds and new retaining wall. All of this is needed to make sure the pool is safe and legal by New York State regulations for 2012 season.

Today, one of the sheds was demolished, ready for a replacement shed to store program equipment and PFD lifejackets.

Our hard-working Summer Maintenance Assistant, Mark, and his wife Rosalie tackled the first shed... and won...

Churches join together to serve!

This Saturday, 6th August, many parishes from across the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island joined together and served at Camp DeWolfe's Service Saturday. Around 40 volunteers painted cabins, shower houses and cleaned the Retreat Lodge. All the cabins are now painted with exterior stain, ready for the next few winters! Volunteers came from across all four Archdeaconries, including Church of the Resurrection, East Elmhurst, St John's Church, Cold Spring Harbor, St James' Church, St James, St George's Church, Hempstead, and Christ Church, Bay Ridge. Many other volunteers from the surrounding communities also gave their time and energy to serve Christ in the 'Dominion in the Sea'.

What a gift to have a Camp where people can connect, engage in community in the outdoors, and serve Christ together in tangible ways. What a blessing to see God's people join together and unite in His Spirit! We are so thankful to serve in such a wonderful ministry.

Painting on Saturday!

This weekend's Service Saturday will be a painting day! The two showerhouses, 5 remaining girls cabins, the Retreat Lodge and hopefully the Arts and Crafts classroom will be all given an exterior coat of stain to help protect them for many years.

We are overjoyed to have groups are signed up from St James Episcopal Church in St James, Church of the Resurrection in East Elmhurst,St George's Church in Hempstead and St John's Church in Cold Spring Harbor.

Staff Opportunities for 2012

Camp DeWolfe is now hiring for the 2012 summer camping season! Paid 10-week opportunities for college-age youth and young adults to serve Christ in 'the Dominion in the Sea' are now available. Camp DeWolfe has launched the 2012 staff application process early so that young adults can connect with the ministry before venturing off to college or work, for a new semester, later this month.

Camp DeWolfe exists to support spiritual formation in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. Please support the college-age adults of the Episcopal Diocese of Long island today by encouraging them to consider ministry opportunities here on Long island next summer. If you are a college-age adult, please consider serving at Camp DeWolfe next summer! Roles including counselors/activity leaders, unit leaders, kitchen assistants and maintenance assistants, are great opportunities for young adults to invest in your very own youth and campers on Long Island!

Go TARGET!

A team of 25 store team leaders, district leaders, interns and staff from Target's Suffolk County District ventured to Camp DeWolfe on Friday 29th July and painted all 8 Boys Cabins in the rain! The team took less than 4 hours to give the cabins a second coat of green stain.

The event was part of Target's volunteer days in the community, where they give back to different organizations, schools and centers that benefit people across Long Island. Camp DeWolfe is so thankful for the time and positive energy that Target staff brought to the day. Many hands make light work!

We look forward to more volunteer opportunities with Target and other organizations and individuals. Thank you Target!!

On Friday 29th July, a group of 25 people from TARGET will volunteer their time at Camp DeWolfe to paint the exterior of the Boys Cabins! This is part of Target's community service program and this event is a district event and will include Store Team Leaders. Service Saturday - Painting Day

On Saturday 23rd July, another group of volunteers from across Long Island served at Camp DeWolfe for a day of painting! Four of the large year-round cabins were given a second coat of stain to help protect them for the next few years. The team endured the heat of the day and embraced the project. They served and sacrificed their time and energy, whilst building community in the outdoors! We are so thankful for the faithfulness of Christ's servants.

On Friday 22nd July, the Camp DeWolfe Board of Managers met for a retreat to vision cast and plan for 2012! The day at Mercer School of Theology in Garden City was a time of prayer, sharing and planning for the next season of Christ's ministry. Alongside Bishop Provenzano and Camp staff Matt and Emma Tees, the Board of Managers defined their roles as AMBASSADORS and ADVOCATES for the ministry of Camp DeWolfe. Matt Tees shared updates about the 2011 renovations and how volunteers from parishes across the Diocese are now getting involved in serving and taking ownership of the resource that is open to everyone on Long Island. Cathedral Staff Volunteer Day

A team of volunteers from the Cathedral in Garden City and Camp DeWolfe Board of Managers spent time clearing out trash from the Meeting Hall, Shower Houses and Dining Hall. They did more landscaping of overgrown shrubs and bushes too. Camp DeWolfe is blessed with hardworking volunteers and Diocesan support!

Parish Banners Wanted

Camp DeWolfe invites parishes from each of the Four Archdeaconries to make a banner for the Canon Davis Dining Hall! Camp DeWolfe wants to celebrate the diversity in communities across the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island and one way is to offer the Canon Davis Dining Hall as a space to celebrate God's people through banner art!

The Canon Davis Dining Hall has four beams that can each hang five parish banners. These banners are to celebrate God's love and joy in different parish communities across the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. Rectangular banners are to be made to the sizes of 5 feet horizontal length by 3 feet vertical height.

Renovations Update

This week at Camp DeWolfe, Slacke Test Borings were on site to complete borings and soil testings of the areas by the Dining Hall and Chapel, as part of the preparation for the Health Department and Building Department permitting for renovations.

The two showerhouses for the cabins are currently being spackled, painted and repaired. More toilets were also repaired across camp! Plumbing work by the Arts and Crafts building is also under repair and decking is being replaced by one of the Lodges. Before and After pictures to follow soon!
